I am not a journalist. I am not a commentator. I am a retired saturation diver/welder who worked worldwide on pipelay vessels and later was a shift supervisor at the Zeebrugge and Dunkirk natural gas terminals. Those terminals were not involved in the sabotage of Nord Stream. I have been retired for 14 years and have no secret information. What I know about underwater explosions doesn't come from YouTube – it comes from working at depths of 10 to 165 meters, with a welding or cutting torch in my hand.

What I write here is not to brag, but to make one fact clear: I know what it takes to destroy a pipeline at 80 meters depth – and I am not speculating.

My Credentials

My diving career included underwater welding and cutting for Atlas Diving in Zeebrugge and COMEX Diving, including SBM repairs in Sète (France), repair of a leaking 18" high-pressure gas line for Amoco using a Plidco clamp in Trinidad, and various welding and construction tasks on oil platforms and pipelayers for ETPM, McDermott, and Brown & Root in Gabon, Scotland, and Norway, together with my friend Rik Pellegrims, the founder of Pellegrims Duikwerken.

My first underwater cutting and welding course in the 42-meter deep Gochenée quarry of Atlas Diving in 1974 was preparation for various works in the new port of Zeebrugge, including installing underwater steel reinforcement, cutting & welding on sheet piles, and underwater concrete pouring. Hundreds of concrete mixers were needed for this. In the then steel factory "Forges de Clabecq", we cleaned clogged cooling water outflows with a Galileo lance, straight into the Dijle river. Environmental concerns were non-existent back then. Afterwards, we had to wash ourselves with tetrachloroethylene, which is considered a mild carcinogen and linked to Parkinson's disease, but I'm still alive. Imagine: two grimy divers in red neoprene suits walking through a steel mill. I also performed underwater inspections in the reactor section of the EDF nuclear power plant in Chooz, France.

Afterwards, I followed a 6-month 5G welding training in Bucksburn, Scotland and Marseille, with 4 weeks of welding in the hyperbaric chamber. Due to the high pressure in the hyperbaric chamber at a simulated depth of 100 meters, there was a lot of smoke development when welding with electrodes. Therefore, two extraction units were needed on either side of the weld pool. Nowadays, this is done by welding robots under the supervision of e.g., Norske Veritas certified welders. A chamber is installed on the seabed and dewatered. Then the diving bell is lowered between two guide cables from the platform onto an underwater “Tie-in construction” to bring equipment and welders down. A typical stay lasted 4 weeks at 12 kg pressure (110 meters + atmospheric pressure). Decompression usually took 3 days. The breathing mixture was 97% helium and 3% oxygen due to the high partial pressure in the lungs.

In 1976, nothing was computerized. The various segments of the 600-meter long stinger had to be checked every hour, as well as the contact between the pipeline and the stinger's rollers. In 1976 I worked day shifts, and in 1977 I did the night shifts from 18:00 to 06:00. You often get visits from curious fish that you can gently stroke. The repair of a single pipeline takes months and must be done in summer when the sea is calm. A potential repair of the three Nord Stream pipelines would require heavy investments. Now that Russia and China have decided to redirect the transport of Siberian gas to China via Mongolia, the repair in the Baltic Sea is highly uncertain. The videos below give a clear picture of how complex these operations are.

At 80 meters, in North Sea or Baltic Sea conditions (4–8°C), you cannot work longer than 10 minutes without a hot water saturation diving suit. You start shivering uncontrollably, your fine motor skills disappear, and you die of hypothermia long before your oxygen runs out. The suit is what turns an icy, dark abyss into a bearable – still dangerous – workplace. It requires a surface support vessel with a powerful heating pump, a diving bell, and a full saturation team.

No amateur diver has ever touched one.

A hot water saturation diving suit with a special diving helmet is a necessity at great depths. It is a sealed, insulated suit with a network of hoses inside that pump temperature-controlled water directly from a surface heater or a unit on the diving bell. The hot water is controlled by the diver using a three-way valve.

With a diving bell, two divers are lowered to the ocean floor to perform underwater work. After surfacing, the diving bell is reattached to the decompression chamber. The pressure in the diving bell and the decompression chamber is equal to the pressure at the ocean floor plus 1 bar. At 80 meters depth, that is 8+1 = 9 bar. And also in the steel reinforcement for the concrete casing of the pipelines.

This was Industrial Sabotage at a Military Level

The NATO Northern Coasts 2022 exercises took place from 3 to 19 September 2022 and involved more than 40 ships and 3,000 personnel from 18 countries. The exercise was focused on anti-submarine warfare and maritime security. The exercise ended on 19 September 2022 – just seven days before the Nord Stream explosions.

1. At 80 meters, without a hot water suit, you are hypothermic within 20 minutes.

2. Without a helium-oxygen mix, or equivalent, you are narced (drunk) and cannot place explosives precisely.

3. Without a diving bell and surface control, you cannot safely decompress – you would suffer crippling decompression sickness or die.

4. A small sailboat cannot carry a hot water heating pump, a helium mixing compressor, a diving bell, a control room, and a saturation team. It is physically impossible. A sailboat would sink under the weight of the hoses alone.

During a joint press conference with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, President Biden said:
"If Russia invades, that means tanks or troops crossing the border again into Ukraine, then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it."
This is not a secret. It was broadcast live. Biden did not say how – sanctions, legal measures, or other means. But the intent was clear: the US wanted Nord Stream 2 dead if Russia invaded.

Seven months later, the pipelines were destroyed by underwater explosions. That does not prove the US did it. But it proves the US had a motive and announced it publicly.

Former President Trump allegedly told German politician Friedrich Merz that the US was behind the sabotage. Trump is not a neutral witness – he makes many unfounded statements. But a former US president accusing his own country of sabotage against a European ally is extraordinary. If true, it's the biggest story of the decade. If false, it's reckless.

No evidence is provided in the video. Take it for what it is: a political statement, not a confession.

What I Conclude as a Retired COMEX Saturation Welder/Diver and Shift Supervisor at the Zeebrugge and Dunkirk Gas Terminals

A thick-walled high-pressure pipeline does not rupture in four places on the same day at a depth of 80 meters by accident because it requires the following:

1. Multiple crews of hardened and highly experienced saturation divers: no amateurs, no soldiers with weekend training.

2. A well-equipped offshore platform with a diving bell and a well-staffed control room with video and audio communication to the working divers below.

3. Oxygen/helium, or contemporary equivalent breathing mixes (for depths below 50 meters)

4. Reliable communication systems with the involved partners

5. Hot water saturation diving suits (to survive the cold at 80 meters for more than a few minutes)

6. Very precise underwater coordinates

7. Lift balloons to lower explosives to the precise location.

8. Remote control sensors and detonators to trigger them from a safe distance, and at the right moment.

9. Extensive planning and intelligence sharing between partners

10. The use of submarines was confirmed after further investigation.

Could the purpose of this story be to hold Ukraine responsible for the sabotage?

Neither the perpetrators of the sabotage nor the insurance companies are likely to pay any compensation. Ukraine, which is losing the war, has never denied this sailboat story and might then possibly have to bear the costs as a result of this sailboat story. Let me be technical:

1. At 80 meters, without a hot water suit, you are hypothermic within 20 minutes.

2. Without a helium-oxygen mix, or equivalent, you are narced (drunk) and cannot place explosives precisely.

3. Without a diving bell and surface control, you cannot safely decompress – you would suffer crippling decompression sickness or die.

That story serves other purposes. It is willful ignorance or deliberate disinformation.

Who Did It?

I don't know. I wasn't there. But the videos above, plus the English article below as well as the operational reality, show us three things:

1. The US publicly wanted Nord Stream 2 gone.
2. A former US president later blamed the US itself.
3. Respected analysts believe the US has a history of covert actions.
This is not a court case. It is a collection of public statements and physical impossibilities (the "sailboat" story) that should make any honest observer demand a full, transparent investigation.

No Amateur Work

The technical characteristics of Nord Stream are known. Each steel pipe has a wall thickness of 41 mm, and is encased in a 110 mm thick layer of reinforced concrete. This casing increases the weight of each 12-meter long pipe to approximately 24 tons, which is necessary to keep the pipeline stable on the seabed. Bekaert is a world-leading producer of steel wire reinforcement for concrete. Regarding the damage caused by the explosions, the operator of both pipeline systems, Nord Stream AG, stated the following: technogenic craters with a depth of 3 to 5 meters were found on the seabed at a distance of approximately 248 meters from each other. The section of pipe between the craters is destroyed, the radius of the spread of pipe fragments is at least 250 meters.

The intention was to sabotage the 4 pipelines, but due to mislocating the fourth pipeline, the second of Nord Stream 1 was blown up at two locations. There were four explosions. This left the fourth pipeline of Nord Stream 2 intact, and in theory, Russian gas could still be exported to Germany. But EU sanctions prevent that.

But it now seems doubtful that Nord Stream 2 – this incredible feat of engineering, logistics, and marine construction – will ever be more than an empty pipe of steel and concrete on the bottom of the Baltic Sea and perhaps that's a good thing.

My Final Word as a Retired Professional

This article is based solely on publicly available information, videos, and my own operational experience. No secret information is used. I have not violated any confidentiality clauses. No one is accused of anything. But I will say this: I worked for years on pipelayers around the world. I inspected a nuclear power plant in the reactor section wearing a special Dräger suit. I wore the hot water suit in icy water up to 160 meters depth. I have the photos and the certificates to prove it. I'm just saying: the world has not been told the whole truth.

State Terrorism or Act of War?

Tunander clarifies the legal distinction. The Nord Stream insurance company (a state-owned enterprise) states that if this is state terrorism, they must pay compensation. If it was an act of war (e.g., carried out by Ukraine as a belligerent), they do not have to pay. The US and its allies prefer the "Ukrainian sailboat" story because it shifts legal liability away from the US. Tunander calls it state terrorism.
